Designing a drug consumption center

How do you design a welcoming space for those who rarely feel welcome?

How do you design a place where drug users feel safe and welcome? Designing with drug-users’ special conditions in mind requires a deep understanding of both the practical and social aspects related to drug consumption. In conjunction with PLH Architects, UiWE has developed a drug consumption center in the Meatpacking District on Vesterbro, Copenhagen.

With a variety of investigative tools, we researched the needs of different user groups and turned our analytical findings into design concepts. The proposal focuses on creating a welcoming atmosphere for users and staff by integrating the center’s functions, design and communication in an intuitive and user-friendly way.
